Mesityl oxide is an α, β-unsaturated ketone with the molecular formula C₆H₁₀O. It is synthesized through the aldol condensation of acetone, followed by a dehydration reaction, typically involving the use of a basic catalyst. Mesityl oxide appears as a colorless, oily liquid with a pungent, honey-like odour. It is less dense than water and slightly soluble in it. Additionally, its vapours are heavier than air.
Application
- Used in paint removers, as a solvent for plastics, lacquers, paints, and varnishes.
- Involved in the production of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK).
- It acts as an insect repellent, and utilized in the flavour, fragrance, and pharmaceutical industries.
